About This Game

AMERICAN PATRIOTS: THE SWAMP FOX is a first-person shooter set during the American Revolutionary war in November 1780. The player assumes the role of Francis Marion, a true American Patriot who fights fiercely against British redcoats. The troops of Colonel Tarleton are hunting him down in a swamp in South Carolina. In the end, Francis Marion will be known as The Swamp Fox.

Features

  • Beer brewing.
  • 18th century warfare.
  • Cabbage farming.
  • Double flintlock pistol.
  • A roguelike gamemode with procedural swamps, items and permadeath.
  • Are you hardcore enough to get the golden weapon in horde mode?
  • Inspired by the ambush scene from The Patriot.

AMERICAN PATRIOTS: THE SWAMP FOX started as a simple small-scale horde shooter but now offers a much more unique experience. The roguelike gamemode lets you sleep in a cozy log cabin to restore your health, has numerous gameplay changing beverages in antique Wistarburgh bottles like "Every kill makes you faster", "10% change that redcoats can freeze" and randomly generated labyrinths with five huge swamp levels. You can also brew beer by following step-by-step the original beer recipe written by George Washington. Brew a dark and tasty porter with a strong flavor of molasses. Once the beer is ready, friendly bluecoats might more likely join you in battle. You also have a small garden near the log cabin where you can grow cabbages to get maximum health. Hunting down redcoats is a lot of fun!

INTRODUCTION:

Well, I’ll be upfront with those who are reading this review… American Patriots: The Swamp Fox is still 100% guaranteed NOT worth six bucks. Let me break it down as to why you probably shouldn’t get this game from Cult Software, and instead get one of their other games if you’re into board games or American history.

UPDATE:

I have not been able to play the latest gamemode that was inserted into American Patriots: The Swamp Fox quite yet, but to be honest, I’m not entirely sure I’d want to check it out. I’ll fully update the review when I get around to it, but this may or may not be up-to-date pros and cons, so keep that in mind when reading on.

STORY/LORE:

The whole game is spent reliving an ambush scene from The Patriots… yeah, that’s it. Look up the scene from that movie, and you’ll get the gist of the game.

GAMEPLAY:

Again, watch the scene. The gameplay is made for you to eventually die off from the mass floods of redcoats, which isn’t really fun and ruins any possible replayability that American Patriots: The Swamp Fox may have had.

VISUAL AESTHETIC:

The environment in American Patriots: The Swamp Fox is green, swampy, and muggy. The redcoats are faceless, but I will say that hitboxes have been fixed up; it may not help for the rest of what I’m about to spout it, but it is something to consider. The pellets that are shot from the redcoats’ muskets look almost like Bullet Bills from the Mario franchise, which ruins a bit of the emersion when I know that bullets the size of cannonballs are getting shot at me. Speaking of the bullets, they also lag a lot, along with everything else, so judging their movement speed and timing is really funky. Finally, motion blur has to go; I normally wouldn’t get sick from motion blur, but I actually started to feel ill from looking at the screen after a while.

AUDITORY AESTHETIC:

The redcoats of American Patriots: The Swamp Fox don’t make any distinct noise when they’re walking up on you, but only when they shoot at you. Easy gameovers occur from running circles and not hearing a redcoat walk up behind me. Let’s not forget the flute music in this game that could cause auditory seizures… wait, that isn’t a thing? Aight, imagine nails on a chalkboard combined with a flute playing the highest note they can right in your ears.

BUGS, GLITCHES, AND OTHER ISSUES:

Apparently the guy behind American Patriots: The Swamp Fox promised, "zombie redcoats," but I saw nothing of the sort. For a, "Halloween," game, there isn’t much spookiness to be had from this. Seems more like an Independence Day-esc game more than a horror-filled treat. Hitboxes were crap at times, the idea you cannot really live for more than a minute or so is kind of a joke, and the game is so laggy and disorienting that I simply couldn’t take the sickness anymore.

OVERALL?

American Patriots: The Swamp Fox is, simply put, a game to avoid. This Halloween game is nothing more than a laggy Independence Day game with the intent on making sure you can’t even live more than a few minutes to enjoy a SINGLE aspect of it. Play one of their board games on Steam; they seem aight.

YOUTUBE PLAYTHROUGH:

American Patriots: The Swamp Fox was played while I blathered about possibly beginning Twitch streaming and such, so here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWkLr9blXnk

This review was submited to Save or Quit![saveorquit.com]

*NOTE* Things have been changed since I submited my review. I have made slight edits to the Steam review to state some of these changes.

Full disclosure, the Dev gave me a copy through my Steam Curator page, and I figured I’d cover the game, more less to say thanks for the game! I should have gotten around to this game sooner before it launched, but I had been busy with life things, and with that I’m glad I never paid $6 for this mess. All it takes is a quick look at the screenshots and the video, and you can already tell what to expect. So let’s get right into it!

The game says it is inspired by the ambush scene from The Patriot. Obviously, if you watched the movie you would know that this game is nothing like it. There is no “ambush” in here, only endless upon endless amounts of faceless redcoats in a tiny muggy swamp/forest area. You assume the role of Francis Marion, who is being hunted down in a swamp in South Carolina, though you honestly can’t tell where you even are as it just looks like a poorly made swamp. The story really doesn’t change/affect anything, as it tells you before you start the game in a simple black screen with white text. Armed with only a Double Flintlock Pistol, the objective is just to survive as long as possible and kill as many redcoats as you can with the end goal of getting a high score when you die. There is also supposedly a gold weapon and “secrets”, but I wasn’t able to get them or find anything. There is only one map, and it’s quite small and has invisible walls, so it doesn’t offer much in terms of map design. If you drop the graphics to low you can actually see the edge of the map and see the enemies spawn in.

This game runs like♥♥♥♥♥ The game ran at 10-15FPS pretty much the entire time, even with playing around with the extremely limited graphical options. Even lowering to the lowest settings the game could barely keep up to 15 FPS, and looked even worse! There is even some terrible motion blur that you can’t disable. This motion blur also causes some wonky mouse drifting which causes inaccurate aiming. Combine that with the terrible framerate, trying to hit anything was almost impossible! The redcoats also have some god awful animations, and even more dodgy hitboxes. The redcoats also don’t give off any sounds, only when they shoot and die, so they will easily walk up behind you and kill you without you even knowing. Expect a lot of cheap deaths like this. They just mindlessly walk out from the trees and creep closer to you and try to shoot you. They don’t have any melee attacks, they will only try to shoot you. On top of that, when a redcoat shoots, their bullet is the size of a cannonball! If they are a fair distance away, you can dodge most shots unless you are too close then it’s instant death.

*EDIT* The dev has added a walking sound to the enemies, added a sound of them spawning in, and has made it that they take longer to shoot you if your back is facing them.

You only get one weapon, a double flintlock pistol. After your two shots it reloads, which also doesn’t have much of an animation it just lowers out of view, and doesn’t have any sound. Also being old flintlocks and muskets, they don’t give off any smoke after being shot which is a huge disappointment! They also only take a couple seconds to reload, which I mean if they were to make it realistic might not be too fun and make the game even harder, but even then they could balance the game better to incorporate it better. With all the flaws, I was only able to get a high score of 11 redcoats, and I have no ambition to try and do better. The game is just not fun to play.

*EDIT* The dev has added a reload sound to the gun. I have made it to 21 redcoats, but the game still runs terrible and still cheap. There was 1 achievement added, Kill 66 redcoats, which as far as I can say, is impossible to do. When you get to 10 kills, the game spawns more enemies than you can shoot and reload at, and you will be swarmed almost instantly. No jumping around will save you.

Verdict

For $6? Oh god no! This game isn’t even worth $1. Do not buy this, it’s not worth it. The game just isn’t fun. It would require a massive amount of work before I’d even recommend it. The Dev has made other games based on the same era and are rated better. If you are interested into strategy/board games, maybe look into the Devs other games, but this one is a hard pass!

This is just a plain neverending wave shooter. Simple as that. The game doesn’t claim to be anything else. A bit unpolished, but it seems to be a one man job. A bit heavy on the price since it is really basic, but I picked it up at a sales so I guess it was OK.

The big let down is how demanding this little game is. I had to play at 720p with lowest settings on everything. And I still had some performance issue when there were many enemies. Hopefully fixed in future updates.
